Welcome to CompostingNZ - the web site for composting research and practice in New Zealand and the South Pacific

News Flash!

This new site was launched on 11 June, 2008 as the successor to UC Composting, previously hosted by the University of Canterbury.

Over the next few months the content of CompostingNZ will be progressively updated and expanded with new pages on Product Utilisation, Marketing, and Education. This will include new educational and promotional initiatives developed by CompostNZ and the NZSoil3 project.

Meanwhile please send us your thoughts, suggestions, updates and photos.

Composting may be viewed as an ancient art and as an emerging scientifically based technology.

If we can successfully merge the art and science and communicate our knowledge, we may reasonably anticipate an improved understanding of the nature and applications of composting, an ability to better predict process performance and product quality, success in commercial ventures and significant improvements in environmental quality.

Here we aim to provide a focus for you to explore and contribute to our collective knowledge about aerobic composting, with particular reference to New Zealand and the South Pacific.

We welcome your contributions and comments!

Our feature photo shows the Horizontal Composting Unit (HCU) Mark 2 developed by Innovative Waste Kaikoura, under construction. The unit is 2.5 m wide, 2 m high and 30 m long. As with the Mark 1 unit, it operates with a retention time of 30 days. For additional photos, please see the Operations page.
