March 2025: Harnessing behavioural science to support waste minimisation

Session 1 - Behaviour Change 101:  Thursday, 13 March, 11am-12.30pm

Session 2 - Using Data to Inform Behaviour Change: Thursday, 27 March, 11am-12.30pm

Behaviour change workshop

WasteMINZ and the WasteMINZ Behaviour Change Sector Group Steering Committee are pleased to bring to you two online training sessions, carefully crafted by BehaviourWorks Australia, to support people working in the waste sector and willing to make an impact through their work by using cutting edge behavioural science insights.

If that sounds like you, then please join Jennifer Macklin (Senior Researcher at BehaviourWorks Australia) for two 90 minute online training sessions.

What will you learn?

Training session 1 - Behaviour Change 101:

Discover the fundamentals of behavioural science in this Behaviour Change 101 webinar. This session will debunk common assumptions and mistakes that can undermine the effectiveness of behaviour change efforts, introduce you to the value of a behavioural science perspective and guide you through a four-step behaviour change process grounded in proven research. Knowing how to avoid common pitfalls will ensure your strategies are built on evidence, not guesswork, and help you approach problems in new, more effective ways. By broadening your understanding of human behaviour, you'll gain fresh insights into how to design initiatives that create real impact.

This session will cover the following learning topics:

  • The value of a behavioural science perspective
  • Common assumptions and mistakes
  • Four step behaviour change process

This session will be held Thursday 13 March 11am-12:30pm

Training session 2 - Using Data to Inform Behaviour Change:

Unlock the power of data to design evidence-based behaviour change initiatives in this Using Data to Inform Behaviour Change webinar. Learn how to identify and apply relevant data and research, set clear program goals, define target behaviours, and uncover the key drivers and barriers shaping your audience’s decisions. This session shows how to integrate data with practical behavioural science tools and frameworks to ensure your efforts are not only rooted in a general understanding of human behaviour, but also evidenced-based. By expanding your skillset with these techniques, you'll be equipped to deeply understand your behaviour change challenges as a foundation for designing targeted and impactful interventions.

Specific topics covered during this session include:

  • Types of relevant data and research
  • Defining behaviour change program goals, audiences and target behaviours
  • Understanding audiences' drivers and barriers

This session will be held Thursday 27 March 11am-12:30pm.

About BehaviourWorks Australia
BehaviourWorks Australia is a behaviour change research enterprise within the Monash Sustainable Development Institute at Monash University. Established in 2011 as a consortium partnership, BehaviourWorks is now the largest applied behaviour change research unit in Australia.
BehaviourWorks dynamic research collective has delivered hundreds of projects across a broad range of areas including health, environmental protection, regulation/compliance, biosecurity, sustainability, social inclusion, energy, safety, consumer decision-making, organisational change and community engagement. Given the complexity of human behaviour, BehaviourWorks employs over 25 university-based, qualified researchers across disciplines from psychology to political science, behavioural economics to systems thinking, knowledge translation, sociology and education. BehaviourWorks is also committed to improving behaviour change literacy in Australia and building the skills and capabilities of government and industry professionals to solve policy and service delivery problems through evidence-informed practice.
BehaviourWorks' trainings content is guided by a structured behaviour change approach – the “BehaviourWorks Method” – for collecting and translating research evidence into practice. The Method has been developed based on the learnings that BehaviourWorks' researchers and their industry partners have collectively gathered from working across an extensive range of behaviour change projects. The Method provides tools related to unpacking problems, identifying and prioritising behaviours to change, gathering insights around key behavioural drivers and barriers, designing behaviour change interventions, and implementing trials to test and evaluate interventions and scaling the learnings into policy and practice.

Jennifer-Macklin BehaviourWorks

Jennifer Macklin

Jennifer is a Senior Researcher at BehaviourWorks Australia, with over 15 years’ experience in applied behaviour change and social research to develop effective policies and programs for individual, household, organisational and system-wide change towards more circular futures. Jennifer has a particular passion for resource efficiency and circular economy, with unique and unmatched expertise in understanding the application of behavioural insights to consumption, waste prevention and recycling behaviours, particularly relevant for household waste.

Through a series of comprehensive literature reviews exploring academic research, emerging behavioural science trials and on-the-ground behaviour change project evaluations, Jennifer has drawn together the latest evidence to understand waste and other pro-environmental behaviours and their underlying decision-making processes, alongside the approaches and strategies most effective in achieving broad-scale change. Complementing this expertise in behavioural insights is deep knowledge of Australia’s waste industry, developed through leading literature reviews and preliminary research; designing, delivering and evaluating a range of waste prevention and recovery strategies, action plans and individual projects; and undertaking targeted research for a variety of invited speaking and media engagements.

With qualifications in Sociology, Statistics and Program Evaluation, Jennifer is currently undertaking a PhD to understand what influences correct sorting of household waste, including for kerbside and drop-off recycling behaviours.
