What topic/issue are you most passionate about when it comes to waste, resource recovery or contaminated land?
I’m passionate about tackling key waste management challenges, particularly in construction and demolition (C&D) waste, disaster waste management, and food waste prevention. C&D waste presents significant opportunities for resource recovery and reducing environmental impact. Effective disaster waste management systems are essential for minimising harm and supporting recovery efforts. Additionally, food waste prevention is crucial for sustainability, with a focus on reducing waste at the source. These areas are closely aligned with my commitment to driving meaningful change in New Zealand’s waste management practices.
What are you reading or listening to right now?
I’m currently listening to Dr. Andrew Huberman’s podcast featuring Dr. Robert Lustig, titled How Sugar & Processed Foods Impact Your Health. In this episode, Dr. Lustig, a neuroendocrinologist and expert in nutrition and metabolic health, discusses the “calories in-calories out” (CICO) model and how specific macronutrients, fiber, and sugars—particularly fructose—affect metabolism and weight regulation. They explore how sugar, especially in liquid form, impacts insulin levels, as well as liver, kidney, and brain health, and how it can be addictive. The episode offers actionable insights into sugar’s role in obesity, mental health, and overall wellness.
Describe your perfect day outside of work.
My perfect day outside of work begins with a morning workout at the gym, followed by a visit to the farmers market to pick up fresh ingredients. I would then bake my own bread and spend the afternoon walking my dog along the beach. Later, I would experiment in the kitchen, trying out a new dish with the produce I bought. It’s a day filled with fitness, creativity, fresh food, and quality time with my dog.
