Picture2In this member spotlight, we talk to Kate Gislason, founder and director of Without Waste, a purpose-driven company focused on delivering practical waste minimisation solutions to events and businesses.

"Helping people understand the long-term consequences of single-use culture—and how their everyday choices can either contribute to pollution or support a more sustainable future—is what motivates me to push for real, measurable change."

Tell us about your organisation

Without Waste NZ is a purpose-driven company focused on delivering practical waste minimisation solutions to events and businesses across Aotearoa. Why did you want to join WasteMINZ?

Being part of WasteMINZ provides valuable opportunities to connect with others passionate about driving sustainable change. I joined to stay up-to-date with industry developments, share insights, and collaborate on innovative waste solutions. It’s inspiring to learn from others in the resource recovery space, and I believe working together is key to achieving long-term impact. WasteMINZ fosters that community, which is essential for both professional growth and meaningful environmental progress.

Picture1What topic/issue are you most passionate about when it comes to waste, resource recovery or contaminated land?

I’m passionate about tackling the environmental impact of single-use items and raising awareness around harmful substances like PFAS in packaging and products. I focus on creating practical, reusable alternatives and driving change through education and system design, especially at events where waste can accumulate quickly. Helping people understand the long-term consequences of single-use culture—and how their everyday choices can either contribute to pollution or support a more sustainable future—is what motivates me to push for real, measurable change.

What are you reading or listening to right now?

Right now, I’ve been listening to RÜFÜS DU SOL—their music is incredibly relaxing and makes me feel like I’m lounging on a beach or sitting on top of a mountain, forgetting all the worries in the world. It’s the perfect soundtrack to unwind after a busy day or to stay calm and focused when managing multiple projects. Their sound creates a great balance between motivation and escape, which I love.

Describe your perfect day outside of work

My perfect day outside of work would be exploring my favourite music festival, Electric Forest—surrounded by music, nature, and immersive art with friends. Even though events and festivals are a part of my work – this one is always just for leisure! I’d spend time dancing to some of my favourite artists and maybe joining a yoga workshop. It’s all about connection, creativity, and letting go—a day full of good vibes, nature, and a little bit of magic.
